Yu Yuan Garden

The images in this first row show the stone taken from the waters of Lake Taihu where many of the unusual rocks found in classical Chinese gardens were submerged to be naturally carved by the currents.

Yu Yuan is a classical Chinese garden meaning Garden of Peace and Comfort.

Built between 1559 and 1577 by local official Pan Yunduan as the private estate for his father, Yu Yuan is a maze of Ming Dynasty pavilions, elaborate gardens and goldfish ponds.

The entire garden occupies 5 acres contained by an undulating wall.
